RIO DE JANEIRO (WHDH) — A Vermont equestrian with ties to Boston said she is thrilled to be competing in her first Olympics.

Laura Graves moved to Boston back in 2008 to become a hairdresser. She later gave up on that career to focus on equestrian competition. Graves has since become one of the top dressage riders in the world.

“There is something very different about being in an Olympic venue and really feeling like an athlete and part of a bigger team than our equestrian team,” said Graves. “We really like we’re a part of Team USA and that is something we don’t get at any of our other competitions, so for that is really special.”

Graves and her horse Verdades won a silver medal in dressage last year at the Pan-Am Games.
