BRATTLEBORO, Vt. (AP) — Vermont authorities are searching for a man who hit a pedestrian with his car, stopped and promised to get help, but never returned.

Vermont state police say 53-year-old Jeffrey Dorsey, of Putney, was walking in the breakdown lane of Route 5 in Dummerston Saturday morning when he was hit.

Dorsey was thrown over the guardrail. He told police a white car stopped and a man got out. The driver reportedly told Dorsey he did not hit him and that he was going to return with help.

The Brattleboro Reformer reports the driver was seen pulling into a nearby gas station before leaving the area. Witnesses told police the car’s windshield and side mirror were damaged.

Dorsey was treated for possible broken bones and a potential back injury.
