WAKEFIELD, MASS. (WHDH) - Northeast Metropolitan Regional Vocational High School in Wakefield was honored by police Monday for their new indoor active shooter detection system, which was installed by the students themselves.

The system uses infrared sensors and sound detection technologies.

“It notifies the police if someone were to fire a weapon,” said student Nick Ferragamo.

Northeast Metro Tech is the first vocational school in the country to adopt the new technology. It is also the first to have its electrical students perform the installation.
