MALDEN, MASS. (WHDH) - Members of the Malden Police department were reunited this week with a small dog they found abandoned and in need of medical attention earlier this year.

Officers found the dog abandoned back in late July, starving and weighing just under three pounds at the time.

The chihuahua, now named Bailey, has been recovering with the Animal Rescue League of Boston since then. On Wednesday, officers met the pup once again, with some saying they were shocked by the progress he had been making.

“Everybody was very distraught over this, including the officers on duty that night, so we’re just overjoyed that we had a part in saving Bailey and making sure that he’s progressed to the point that he’s at,” said a Malden police officer.

The Animal Rescue League said Bailey has gained one pound and continues to be on the mend, with his skin healing and fur starting to regrow.
