NEWBURYPORT, MASS. (WHDH) - A 7NEWS viewer recorded a video of a whale breaching near Plum Island.
Craig Jesiolowski was getting ready for work when he spotted something in the water so he quickly pulled his phone out to capture the rare sight.
“It was between about 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. I looked out the window and saw what appeared to be a whale but very close to shore probably about 10 to 20 yards off the beach,” said Jesiolowski.
After leaving for the day, his wife kept the camera rolling.
“My wife then picked it up and caught the whale breaching and it looked like he was chasing after pogies,” he said.
He said it is rare to see a whale in the area.
“In prior years before Salisbury, you usually see a lot of whales out there but we haven’t seen a lot off Plum Island,” he said.
But, he admits there has been an uptick in sightings recently.
“In the last week and a half we’ve actually seen three whale sightings,” he said.
Jesiolowski said the big creature stuck around for about 30 mins before heading back out to deeper water.
