WATERTOWN, Mass. (WHDH) — Students at Watertown High School spent more than three hours in Lockdown after a bullet was found inside a classroom, but Friday afternoon they were dismissed and searched class by class.
According to police the single bullet was found on a projector at the beginning of the day. Students were locked in as officers swept the school to make sure it wasn’t a sign of something bigger.
Some parents kept in touch about the situation with their children inside the school by texting and on social media.
"Hopefully it's just a kid playing a hoax and it’s nothing more than that. It's frightening,” Michelle Burns, a parent, said.
Students were dismissed one classroom at a time and searched with with metal detectors as they exited the building. Police said they don’t know exactly how or why the bullet ended up in the classroom.
“We have no idea, obviously someone must have brought it here and it’s part of the investigation,” Watertown Police Lieutenant Michael Lawn said.
Students reported being a little bit stir crazy and worried, but they’re glad everyone is safe.
"A couple of people panicked. They didn't know what was going on really,” one student said.
And parents say they trust school officials and police to protect the children.
"You just don't know what the kids are going to do these days. So you worry that the kids are unsafe, although I know the kids are safe here and they’re doing what they need to do protect the kids. I just worry,” Norma Divito said.
Watertown High School had a basketball game scheduled for Friday night, the game will be played but only the gymnasium will be open as the investigation continues in the rest of the school.
