Highs again fell short of normal today, but if this is winter, we’re going to boil next summer.

Despite the isolated, spotty freezing drizzle along Rt. 2 and in the Merrimack Valley this morning (and again this afternoon in Southern NH), this is a warm "winter" storm passing through New England. Showers are spotty for most tonight, but more steady – and at times moderate – across the Islands and Cape where you are positioned a little closer to low pressure.

That small system will move east late, giving us a bit of a lull ahead of the next batch of rain tomorrow. This second wave of rain is solid and still developing. It promises to produce some moderate or heavy rain into tomorrow evening. Highest likelihood of that will be through Western Mass. & Southwest NH, but a few of those may drift into Central/Eastern Mass. as well. All told, a good soaking coming, but not a panacea for the extended drought (note the nearly 2" hole for the month of November in the map to the right).

That second wave of rain is tied to a stronger low pressure system which will crank up across Northern New England. It’s enough to tap some colder air and switch the rain to snow by Thursday…but that’s in the mountains of Northern New England, not here.

For us, it’s Mother Nature’s version of Throwback Thursday where our temperatures go from the mid and upper 50s to the low 40s late day (see right). Along with a gusty wind, it will feel like we’re shifting into winter.

But alas, the wind mellows and the temperatures warm into the weekend. We may be nudging 60 in spots come Sunday!

Er, winter?

Pete
