WELLESLEY, Mass. (WHDH) — A Wellesley family is thanking actor Tom Hanks for an autographed typewriter, a gift that took them by surprise.

Hanks is a typewriter enthusiast who collects the machines. He was recently featured in the documentary “California Typewriter” with several other artists who spoke about their love of typewriters.

Nick De Peyster said he wanted his son Rowan to set a goal for writing one thank-you note a week and Rowan decided to write to Hanks. The family had just seen “California Typewriter” and Rowan was inspired to write to Hanks and ask for one of his typewriters. He also promised to use the typewriter to write his thank-you notes and said he would also purchase a typewriter to give to another family.

Rowan sent the letter, never expecting to hear back. Three months later, the De Peysters got a package from Hanks containing an autographed vintage typewriter.

“My jaw pretty much hit the floor, as did Rowan’s,” said De Peyster. “We just looked at each other in shock and disbelief.”

Hanks also included a “Hank-O-Gram” to explain how to use the typewriter and a letter listing 11 reasons to use a typewriter. The family has gotten to work keeping their promise, writing 12 thank-you notes since Saturday. One of the notes will be going to Hanks.
