WELLESLEY, MASS. (WHDH) - Wellesley and Needham Police are warning residents of mailbox thieves who may be targeting cards with checks inside.
Police are urging anyone who is sending last minute holiday cards to avoid outdoor blue mail boxes.
Needham Police say several mailboxes in the town have been compromised without a key being used. However, in Wellesley, police believe the thieves have stolen the postmaster’s key to the mailboxes.
“The checks have been altered, rewritten for various dollar amounts, they’ve been deposited and rewritten to various bank accounts,” said Officer Mike Pino of the Wellesley Police Department.
Police say another concern is thieves stealing personal information from checks and selling it online.
“It’s scary to think about, your mail is not even safe,” said resident Melissa Nunes.
Those whose local mailboxes have been compromised are encouraged to use a collection box in another area, use a collection box at work, deposit mail at a post office, or hand mail directly to a uniformed carrier.
