A Weymouth High School student has been diagnosed with a case of the mumps.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health on Thursday confirmed they are responding to a reported mumps case at the school.

In a statement, the Weymouth Public Schools superintendent said:

We received information from the Weymouth Health Department and Massachusetts Department of Public Health that one Weymouth High School student has been confirmed to have acquired the Mumps infection.  This afternoon, we sent out a health advisory to high school families to inform them about the situation and to share information about the Mumps including signs and general precautions. At this time, there are no other reports indicating that any other student, staff member, or child at Weymouth High is infected with Mumps. Our health services team is working closely with the Weymouth Health Department and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to continue to monitor the situation and take the appropriate steps.

The report comes after recent mumps cases at Harvard University and UMass-Boston.
