Plenty of cold air is in place this morning to support snow, however, as this next storm tracks to our west, the southerly wind eventually wins out, changing snow to ice to rain. The cold air is entrenched now though, and that cold, dense air will be slow to move, allowing for slick travel for several hours late today and this evening.
Snow starts between 3:00-6:00PM today as temps hover in the upper 20s and lower 30s late this afternoon. It’ll start earlier the farther west you go and later in that time frame closer to the coast. It’s been cold, the ground is frozen, so that snow won’t have any issues sticking once flakes start to fly. We’ll catch a few hours of light to moderate snow early this evening before changing to sleet, freezing rain and eventually rain. Most towns pick up 1-2″ of snow/sleet before the changeover and that’ll be enough for plenty of slick spots after sunset, into the evening. Northwest of 495, those totals are more like 2-4″. While we change to rain fairly quickly tonight at the coast and south of the Mass Pike (by 9PM), the process is slower deep inland, and several hours of freezing rain near and north and west of 495 will mean untreated roads are icy there past midnight.
All of us go to plain ole rain by tomorrow morning and showers are in and out through the day. West to southwest winds pick up, allowing for a busy breeze as well as a temperature surge. Most towns reach the 50s with the warmest locations closing in on 60 across Southeast Mass! Showers may produce locally heavy rain and a rumble of thunder at times.
We’re back into the cold on Monday, and we stay cold.
A weak low zipping in from the west will likely drop some light, fluffy snow Tuesday afternoon and evening, perhaps adding a couple inches of fresh snow on the ground. Wednesday is cold, but it’s Wednesday night when the bottom falls out as we track an Arctic front that barrels in here, dropping temps into the single digits and lower teens for Thursday!
Have a good weekend.
