A husband and wife were killed Sunday after a tree fell on their car in Abington.

The incident occurred on Rockland Street shortly after 10:00 a.m. When fire officials arrived, they said they found both victims trapped inside the BMW. Crews used the Jaws of Life to rescue the two victims, who were then taken to South Shore Hospital. Both victims were pronounced dead at the hospital.

The victims were identified as 49-year-old Franklin Texeira and his wife, 51-year-old Manuela Texeira. The couple was from Whitman and had an adult son. Neighbors said they were a friendly, nice couple and they were both often seen out in the neighborhood, walking their dog.

The Texeiras owned two Dunkin Donuts in Rockland and their current and former employees are in shock over the news.

"They are two of the most generous, sweet, caring people you’ll ever meet," said former employee Stephanie Roy. "They treat their employees like gold."

Abington’s fire chief said the strong winds and snow are mostly likely to blame for toppling the rotting tree.
