A Wilmington man was arrested after what police are describing as an alarming act.

According to police, the man walked into a store and then flashed a young child.

The man is now in custody and facing serious charges.

Walter MacDougall, 71 of Wilmington, was arrested for allegedly exposing himself to an 8-year-old girl.

Police said the incident happened last week inside a Market Basket store in Wilmington.

According to a police report, MacDougall approached the girl while she was playing with children in the deli area while her mother was ordering.

Police said MacDougall "continuously placed himself very close to the children and did seem to circle around them many times."

MacDougall then allegedly exposed himself.

Police were able to identify MacDougal through surveillance video and the credit card he used in the store.

Police said he has a history of sex offenses, including prior incidents in 2003, 1986, and 1969 and a recent possible exposure in Reading that resulted in no charges.

Market Basket customers applaud the store for helping police make a quick arrest.

MacDougall was charged with "open and gross lewdness." He’s free on $7,000 cash bail.
