Freezing Rain Advisory Until Midnight
What. A. Mess. After 1-3" of snow and sleet fell this morning, patchy sleet, freezing rain and drizzle continue this afternoon. Although much of the precipitation is tapering off, the combination of the incoming cold from the north and left over freezing drizzle will create plenty of headaches through this evening and keep the sanders out.
A rapid refreeze of the slush and creation of black ice is ongoing this afternoon from north to south as low level, very dense, cold air oozes back south. That’ll drop temperatures from the mid 30s to 40 back to the mid to upper 20s really quickly (even colder in northern MA). With the refreeze/black ice, untreated roads, overpasses, sidewalks and driveways ice back up and become very slick. Careful driving this afternoon/evening and watch your step. Even in the Boston metro area, temps drop by 3-4pm and even by 5pm, the numbers drop below freezing for much of the South Shore. There’s not a lot of precipitation left to fall, but the patches of freezing drizzle will be enough to create a glaze and slick spots for many. We should dry out by tomorrow morning, but a freezing rain advisory is in place until Midnight for that freezing drizzle this evening.
A few more showers run through here tomorrow evening before the rest of the week runs quiet and seasonably cold. New Year’s Eve in Boston looks good with dry conditions and midnight temps in the 30s.
We could catch a snow shower Sunday afternoon with an arctic front, but no major storms are expected through the weekend.
Stay safe this evening!
