WINDHAM, Conn. (AP) — A house fire in Windham has claimed the life of a woman.

WTIC-TV reports the fire broke out shortly after 6 a.m. on Saturday and flames were seen shooting from the roof of the home.

Fire officials say one of the residents, Regina Aszkar, died after becoming trapped in the home. Her husband survived and was treated at the scene.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

Neighbors said the couple was known for rescuing animals from shelters. The neighbors are now helping care for those animals, at least one of which was injured in the fire.
