A woman was killed after a fire in an apartment on Talbot Avenue in Dorchester early Saturday morning.

Officials said flames sparked just before 4 a.m. The fire was contained to one apartment in the 54-unit building, which used to house the Girls Latin Academy.

Fire officials said residents were sheltered to other parts of the building during the fire and others were brought onto MBTA buses to get out of the cold. Many have since returned to their apartments.

The victim, who lived on the second floor, was pronounced dead at Boston Medical Center. Other tenants described her as a "sweet, loving person" who took care of her neighbors and was known by everyone in the building. No other injuries were reported. This is Boston’s second fatality from a fire this year.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and the damage is estimated to be around $250,000.
