A woman is dead after a fire broke out at a South End apartment building early Saturday morning, according to the Boston Fire Department.

The fire started on the third floor of a five-story apartment building on East Canton Street. Firefighters said it did not spread to any other apartments. Neighbor Angelisa Andredas said she heard someone in the hallway screaming for help and when she opened her door, she was greeted with black smoke.

"He kept screaming, my wife, my wife, there’s a fire," said Andredas.

Andredas said she grabbed her young twin daughters and got out of the building, then she ran back in to warn her neighbors and make sure they all got out safely.

"It was just very hard to see anything, to try to get to a door," said Andredas. "The smoke was super bad, it was super strong."

Andredas said her neighbor tried to save his wife but the flames were too intense. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Damage is estimated at $100,000. The incident remains under investigation.
