WORCESTER, MASS. (WHDH) - A Worcester man was charged Friday with trying to kill his young nephew.

Police said Taj McDonald, 21, called 911 Thursday night and told them he killed his 3-year-old nephew. Police rushed to the scene at Lincoln Village on Country Club Boulevard, a public housing condo complex. There, officers said they found the 3-year-old boy with trauma to his face and neck, but he was conscious and alert.

According to the police report, McDonald told police he forcibly strangled the boy, tried drowning him in the bathtub and then forcibly pushed him down the stairs.

“I heard a little kid just crying and screaming and crying but I didn’t think anything of it,” said a worker who was painting on the property. “I thought it was a little kid crying.”

The boy was taken to the hospital, where he remains in stable condition. He is expected to be OK.

In a statement, DCF said, “The Department of Children and Families has received a report and is investigating. We are also collaborating with law enforcement in its investigation.”

McDonald faces multiple charges, including child endangerment and attempted murder. A court psychologist suggested McDonald undergo a psychiatric evaluation.
