BRAINTREE, MASS. (WHDH) - A worker died after falling into a water tank in Braintree Thursday.

Officials said the man was in the tank to do an inspection when he apparently lost air and drowned. The man’s colleague noticed something was wrong and dove in to try and rescue him but was unable to reach him.

“This is a tragic day, it’s a difficult day for us,” said Braintree Mayor Joseph Sullivan.

Emergency crews helped the second man and wrapped him in blankets before getting him into an ambulance. Firefighters said he was soaking wet and numb and was hospitalized with hypothermia and exhaustion.

The worker’s body remains in the tank; officials said the tank has been isolated and does not pose a threat to the town’s water supply. Thousands of gallons of water are now being drained so the man’s body can be removed.
