CHELSEA, MASS. (WHDH) - A World War II veteran’s family teamed up with his doctor at MGH Chelsea Health Care Center to surprise him with a party for his 100th birthday on Veterans Day.

Ernest Landry was born on Nov. 11, 1916 in Canada. After years in the Royal Canadian Air Force, where he helped build an Air Force base, he moved to Massachusetts and worked as a carpenter. He married his wife, Margaret, in 1951 and they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this past June. The couple have five children, 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

“When you’re younger, you don’t get to appreciate your parents as you do when you become older,” said his daughter, Donna Landry. “We’re grateful every day.”

Landry’s granddaughter, Amanda Schneider, said he swears his secret to a long life has always been a spoonful of honey each day. Margaret Landry said her husband still takes honey in his coffee every day.
