YARMOUTH, Mass. (WHDH) – A man has been arrested for beating a pregnant woman while her 18-month-old child was present.

Matthew Chicoine, 22, of West Yarmouth, was observed at the scene of a domestic assault Tuesday at the Tidewater Motor Lodge on Route 28 where he was reportedly hostile and uncooperative.

After he was placed under arrest, Chicoine continued to yell and scream. After he got to the police cruiser, he smashed his head against the rear glass in an attempt to break the window. When asked to stop by police, he continued to scream obscenities.

The female survivor of the attack was five and a half months pregnant. Her 18-month-old child was in the room at the time of the incident.

She described being hit in the face several times and blacking out twice while being strangled.

Chicoine also reportedly kicked the bathroom door in on top of her as she shielded their child.

He was taken to the Yarmouth Police Station where he was held until he was transported to Barnstable District Court.

He has been charged with three counts of aggravated assault and battery while armed with a dangerous weapon, attempted murder, being in possession of a dangerous weapon during a disturbance intimidation of a witness and two counts of malicious destruction of property.
