Canada’s Derek Drouin won the men’s high jump gold medal Tuesday night. He cleared his first jump at every height up through his winning mark, 2.38m (7 feet, 9 ¾ inches). 

Mutaz Essa Barshim’s best mark, 2.36m (7-8 ¾), earned him the silver medal. He celebrated by doing a backflip.

2012 Olympic silver medalist Erik Kynard of the United States, wearing patriotic high socks, finished sixth. 

The women’s high jump competition begins Thursday morning. Representing the United States will be Vashti Cunningham, the daughter of former NFL quarterback Randall Cunningham, four-time Olympian Chaunte Lowe and Inika McPherson.
