In an unprecedented and unsurprising battle for Olympic gold, Claressa Shields retained her Olympic championship in women’s middleweight boxing and became a two time boxing gold medalist.
Shields showed her trademark strength in the ring, never letting her opponent Nouchka Fontijn (NED) get ahead of her in the scoreboard.
Shields is the first American to earn two gold medals in boxing in over a century, and is the first U.S. boxer to successfully defend an Olympic title.
This match was a rematch of sorts as, Fontijn faced Shields earlier this year in the finals of the 2016 World Championships. Fontijn also lost out there when matched with Shields’ strength in the ring.
