When the women’s singles competition kicked off on August 6th, there were 64 athletes across 32 matches contending for a medal.
Now there are four players remaining across two matches: Germany’s 2nd-seeded Angelique Kerber, who will play Puerto Rico’s unseeded Monica Puig in the Gold Medal Match; and the United States’ 7th-seeded Madison Keys, who will play the Czech Republic’s 11th-seeded Petra Kvitova in the Bronze Medal Match.
On the men’s singles side, Japan’s 4th-seeded Kei Nishikori will square off against reigning gold medalist and 2nd-seeded Andy Murray in a semifinal. That match will take place at 11 AM ET. Immediately after, Spain’s 3rd-seeded Rafael Nadal – who won gold in doubles last night, and earned singles gold at the Beijing 2008 Games – will play unseeded Argentine Juan Martin del Potro. Del Potro is the reigning singles bronze medalist who’s made an incredible comeback following years of wrist surgeries.
But wait – there’s more. The women’s doubles bronze match will see two Czech teams fight for a medal; that will take place on court 1 at approximately 1 PM ET.
Finally, good news for fans of Team USA. Two American teams have advanced to the semifinals of the mixed doubles competition, guaranteeing the U.S. at least one medal in the category. In the first mixed match, Venus Williams and Rajeev Ram will play India’s Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna. That will air at approximately 3 PM ET on court 1. After that, Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Jack Sock will take on the Czech team of Lucie Hradecka and Radek Stepanek.
On Friday night, Sock won men’s doubles bronze alongside compatriot Steve Johnson.
