France headlines team epee on final day of fencing

Fencing wraps up its final day in Rio with the men on the piste in the team epee event.

France is the favorite to win gold. They have won a medal in the event every year since 1996.

They won bronze in Atlanta, silver in Sydney and back-to-back gold in 2004 and 2008. The event was not held in 2012.

With history on their side, France also boasts number one ranked fencer Gauthier Grumier who took bronze in the individual epee this year and top five fencer Daniel Jerent.

France has a chance to make Olympic history should they win gold. They would break a tie (8 medals) with the Italians for the most gold medals in the men’s team epee.

The Ukraine is also expected to contend for a spot on the podium. The number two ranked team in the world won at the World Championships in 2015 and are lead by three-time Olympian Bogdan Nikishin. Nikishin was eliminated from the individual epee in the Round of 16.

Hungary is also expected to challenge for gold. The Hungarians won silver in the team event in Athens; from that team returns Gabor Boczko and Geze Imre who won silver in the individual epee. Should Hungary win it all, it would be their first gold medal in the event since 1972, two years before Imre was born.

The United States will not be represented in the event after failing to qualify.
