After five races, Italy’s Elia Viviani went into the final event with the omnium lead and he held it throughout the points race to win the gold medal.

Mark Cavendish made big contact with Viviani who was knocked down and caused two other bikes to crash. Viviani missed a sprint and needed a replacement bike, but got back up and rejoined the peleton.

Great Britain’s Cavendish also had an impressive ride and took the silver medal, his first ever Olympic medal in a storied, impressive career.

Defending champion Denmark’s Lasse Norman Hansen made a huge comeback to finish in third.
