Josh Prenot takes silver in 200m breaststroke; first U.S. medal in the event since 2004

Dmitriy Balandin won Kazakhstan’s first Olympic gold ever in the 200m breaststroke on Wednesday, but the headline was American Josh Prenot’s silver medal: No American man had won a medal in the 200m breaststroke since Mike Barrowman won gold in 1992 and Brendan Hansen grabbed a bronze in 2004.

Balandin clocked two minutes, 7.46 seconds to Prenot’s 2:07.53.

Russia’s Anton Chupkov took the bronze. Fellow American Kevin Cordes, who was fourth in the 100m breaststroke earlier in the week, clocked 2:08.34 for eighth place.

The 2012 Olympic champion, Hungary’s Daniel Gyurta, surprisingly did not advance out of the preliminary heats, finishing 17th by 0.02 seconds.
