Gold: Omar McLeod (Jamaica)
Silver: Orlando Ortega (Spain)
Bronze: Dimitri Bascou (France)
Omar McLeod won Jamaica’s first Olympic gold medal in the 110m hurdles, crossing the line in in 13.05 seconds Tuesday night.
Orlando Ortega, a Cuban native who switched his allegiance to Spain prior to the Olympics, earned the silver medal by finishing .12 seconds later.
Bronze medalist Dimitri Bascou claimed the first Olympic medal for a French athlete in the event since 1996. He edged fellow French hurdler Pascal Martinot-Lagarde by .05 seconds.
It was the first time a U.S. athlete failed to finish on the Olympic 110m hurdles podium, with the exception of the U.S. boycott of the 1980 Olympics. Devon Allen finished fifth, and Ronnie Ash was eighth after somersaulting over the finish line.
Allen is a wide receiver for the University of Oregon. He plans on returning to Eugene to play football for the Ducks this fall.
The women’s 100m hurdles semifinals will be held Wednesday at 7:45 p.m. ET, followed by the final about two hours later. Americans Brianna Rollins and Kristi Castlin were the two fastest hurdlers in the opening round.
