It did not take long for world records to start falling at the 2016 Olympics. In the very first medal event, Ethiopia’s Almaz Ayana broke the 10,000m world record.
Two more world records were broken in Rio. Watch them all below:
Women’s 10,000m: Almaz Ayana (Ethiopia)
Ethiopia’s Almaz Ayana shattered the 10,000m world record, which had stood since 1993. Her time of 29 minutes, 17.45 seconds lowered the world record by more than 14 seconds.
After the race, she admitted that breaking the world record “was not my plan.”
Men’s 400m: Wayde van Niekerk (South Africa)
Racing against Olympic champions Kirani James and LaShawn Merritt, Wayde van Niekerk finished in 43.03 seconds, lowering Michael Johnson’s 17-year-old world record by .15 seconds.
Johnson, who was there working as a track and field TV analyst for the BBC, Tweted his congratulations.
Women’s hammer throw: Anita Wlodarczyk (Poland)
Anita Wlodarczyk is in a league of her own in the women’s hammer throw. Her winning mark of 82.29m (269 feet, 11 inches) broke her own world record. She know owns the top ten throws of all time.
