For the fifth consecutive Olympics, a team from Russia won the team synchronized swimming gold medals. With this win, 2016 duet gold medalists Natalia Ishchenko and Svetlana Romashina won their fifth career gold medals, tying the record for most gold synchronized swimming medals ever with their former teammate Anastasia Davydova.

Friday’s “Angels” themed free routine scored a dominating 99.1333 points, and was added to their technical routine score from Thursday for a total of 196.1439 points.

China’s “Finding Dragon” free routine secured them a second-consecutive silver medal in the team event. They scored 97.3667 points and combined with their technical score for a total of 192.9841 points.

The battle for the bronze medal was much tighter.

Japan’s free routine, set to original music, earned 95.4333 points for a total score of 189.2056. Japan captured the bronze medal, edging Ukraine, competing in their first Olympics to a spellbinding “magic box” themed free routine, by 0.5976 points.

Brazil scored 87.2000 points for their “Carnival” free routine, tallying 171.9985 for sixth place overall.

The team from Egypt opened the session with a program set to remixed music from the “Lion King” soundtrack, which scored 78.5667 points. They finished in seventh place with a combined free routine and technical routine score of 155.5505 points.

There were notable countries missing from the team competition field: After finishing with silver medals at the 2008 Olympics and bronze medals at the 2012 Olympics, Spain shockingly did not qualify a team to compete at the 2016 Games. The U.S. did not qualify a team for Rio, either.
