Gold: Sandra Perkovic (Croatia)
Silver: Melina Robert-Michon (France)
Bronze: Denia Caballero (Cuba)

Croatia’s Sandra Perkovic won her second consecutive Olympic women’s discus throw gold medal Tuesday morning.

Perkovic jumped up and down in frustration when her first two attempts went into the protective netting. But her third attempt travelled 69.21m (227 feet), and it stood as the best mark of the day. She won her gold medal in 2012 with a throw of 69.11m (226-9).

She became the third woman to successfully defend an Olympic title in the event.

Melina Robert-Michon broke the French national record on her way to claiming the silver medal.

Germany’s Christoph Harting won the Olympic men’s discus throw gold medal on Saturday, four years after his older brother Robert won the same title.
