The second day of wrestling at the Rio Games features two of Greco-Roman’s heavier weight classes: the 85kg and 130kg divisions.
It’s a day that could potentially see some history made thanks to Cuban heavyweight Mijain Lopez. Lopez, who is competing at his fourth Olympics, is the two-time reigning gold medalist. If he wins a third straight gold medal, he would become just the second Greco-Roman wrestler to accomplish the three-peat. The only other one to do so is the legendary Aleksandr Karelin.
Standing in his way could very well be Turkey’s Riza Kayaalp. Lopez defeated Kayaalp in the semifinals at the 2012 Olympics, but lost to Kayaalp in the final round of last year’s world championships. The world No. 1 (Kayaalp) and No. 2 (Lopez) will be on opposite sides of the bracket and could be destined for another meeting in the gold medal round.
