RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL (WHDH) - Laurie Hernandez is walking away from her first Olympics with two medals and it likely will not be her last appearance at the games.
Hernandez, 16, is the youngest member of the “Final Five” United States Women’s Gymnastics team. She earned her first medal when the Final Five took gold in the team event. She then won silver on the beam.
“I’ve had a great experience. It’s just amazing,” said Hernandez. She called her silver medal a present to herself.
“The individual medal is nice because I felt like I just was able to go out there and I control what I do and I was able to go out there and perform possibly to my best and it’s nice.”
Hernandez called the team gold medal special because the girls got to experience it with each other. She said she and her teammates support each other and have fun helping each other with makeup before meets.
