EUSTIS, Maine (WHDH) — A group of people rushed to the rescue of a deer after the animal fell through thin ice on a lake in Maine.

Justin Wyman said he noticed the deer stuck in the freezing water several hundred feet from shore. He got in a boat with members of Maine’s Warden Service to help but they had trouble getting to the deer at first. The group had to break through the ice on the lake just to get the boat in the water and managed to get to the deer about a half hour later.

By the time they reached the deer, they got a rope around the deer’s neck and guided him back to shore. The deer struggled to get out of the water but managed to get back on dry land.

Wyman said the deer was cold but alive. He and the other two men believe the deer is now doing fine.
