2 hikers safe after getting lost on Vermont’s highest peak

7 News WHDH

UNDERHILL, Vt. (AP) — Two Massachusetts women are safe after getting lost while hiking on Vermont’s tallest peak, Mount Mansfield.

State police say Rebecca Cohen and Jennifer Desrosiers, both 32 and from Worcester, Massachusetts, called 911 at about 3:30 p.m. Friday and reported they had hiked off the trail and were lost.

A GPS location helped first responders determine that two were near Cantilever Rock on the western side of the mountain.

Emergency crews from the Underhill-Jericho Fire Department and Colchester Technical Rescue located the two on an outcropping.

Police say steep terrain, loss of daylight and high winds complicated the rescue efforts, but the hikers were eventually able to walk out uninjured with the help of emergency personnel.
