The Mayor of Rio de Janeiro inaugurated Brazil’s largest underground tunnel Sunday, less than two months before the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
The tunnel was named after former Rio de Janeiro mayor and former Rio state governor Marcello Alencar, who died in 2014.
The opening came six months after it was originally scheduled for completion last December.
The tunnel is more than two miles long, and the inauguration comes just days after Rio’s interim state governor declared a state of financial emergency.
The issue was that the state government is bankrupt and can’t meet its financial obligations ahead of the games.
Rio’s Mayor Eduardo Paes said that the tunnel was financed by private funds.
But he said the bill for Olympics security “will break the mayor’s office,” and he asked for help from Brazil’s federal government to pay for security.
The games are set to begin on August 5.
