KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WHDH) — Professional cyclist Lance Armstrong organized a bike ride in Michigan to honor five cyclists killed in a crash last week.
Six-hundred cyclists participated in the ride, which traced the route the cycling club took when a pickup truck crashed into the group, killing five. Five empty bicycles now site at the site of the crash in their memory.
“It just struck me, I had to come,” said Armstrong. He wore the Chain Gang cycling club jersey as a tribute to the club’s members killed in the crash. Earlier in the day, Armstrong visited cyclists in the hospital and met with victims’ families.
Crash survivors watched the ride, saying they were overwhelmed by all the love and support they have received.
“I’m so grateful to everyone for their support, it means a lot to me and my family,” said Jennifer Johnson, who watched from a stretcher. “And just praying for those who are still recovering, they need a lot of prayers.”
