Grilling safety

Grill fire, burns from flare-ups and improper use of charcoal lighter fluid increase during barbecue season. Over 70% of gas grill fires occur between May and September.

  • Grill outdoors
  • Keep grill 10 feet from the side of the house
  • Establish three-foot circle of safety around the grill
  • Don’t leave the grill burning unattended
  • Smoking and mulch safety
  • Provide appropriate ash trays for smokers so they won’t be tempted to put butts in near by landscaping

Fireworks safety

  • Enjoy professional, supervised fireworks
  • The possession of any fireworks by private citizens is illegal in Massachusetts
  • This includes sparklers that can burn at 1200 degrees, party poppers, snappers, firecrackers, cherry bomb

Prevent Sunburns

  • Be sure to wear a broad spectrum sunscreen, with an SPF of at least 15
  • Use SPF 30 for extended time outdoors
  • Reapply every 1 1/2 to 2 hours and after swimming
  • Avoid exposure during peak hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Camp fires

  • Use the campfire ring or pit provided by the campground where fires are permitted
  • Be sure to have a bucket of water handy and to completely extinguish the fire before leaving
