BOSTON (WHDH) - New England’s reputation as one of the top spots for higher education is well known, and according to one list, it stands up.

Forbes came out with its ninth annual list of America’s top colleges and half of the top 20 are in New England.

Stanford holds the number one spot, but Williams College in Western Massachusetts is this year’s runner-up.

Harvard, MIT, Amherst College, and Tufts University represent Massachusetts in the top 20, and Boston College checks in at 22.

Forbes considers student satisfaction, likelihood of getting a good job upon graduation, and four year graduation rate, among other factors.

Forbes acknowledges that their rankings do not quantify the process of picking a college.

The list of New England schoools in the top 25:

2. Williams College
4. Harvard
5. MIT
6. Yale
8. Brown
9. Wesleyan
12. Amherst
17. Dartmouth
18. Tufts
19. Bowdoin
