HAMPTON, N.H. (AP) — Hampton police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 19-month-old child in the New Hampshire community.

Police did not identify the child who died on Wednesday. The cause of death has yet to be determined.

Police say that during the course of their investigation the child’s step-father, 30-year-old Leo Witham, of Hampton, was arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a child for purposely violating a duty to care. He is also charged with possession of a controlled drug and falsifying physical evidence.

Witham was taken to the Rockingham County Jail. Bail was set at $10,000 cash. He’s due to be arraigned Tuesday.

It’s unclear if Witham has an attorney.
