I know it’s been a little cool lately, but we need to back away from the edge here folks. I’m already getting emails and questions about whether or not this current cool spell will sink the rest of summer.
Are you kidding me? We need to suppress the urge to panic and reason with the situation. This cool spell is just that. A spell. A chilly, record-setting cool snap that is almost typical of June these days. This is NOT 2009 (the most recent year without a summer). In that particular summer, the snow cover
was more pronounced over North America. Some climatologists argue that this lent a hand to an already cool Northeastern US and Southeast Canada. Maybe so. We certainly couldn’t get a break between the shots of cool air from the Eastern Canada and the plumes of tropical rain moving up from the South.
That’s changed now.
The snow cover over North America has virtually vanished. And as you can see, it was already below normal in April. Bottom line: there’s little cold in the pipeline. Certainly not enough to sustain frequent cold shots into New England for weeks on end. It’s for that reason that I think the heat will be back.
So let’s move on. We’re not necessarily to normal yet, but we’re at least out of the 40s and 50s. 60s will rule in the coming days with a few 70s showing up by the weekend. Yes, the weekend is looking dandy. Tons of sun and seasonable highs in the low 70s. Air will remain dry too, so humidity will not be a factor…for a while.
Make do and start planning for those outdoor activities…without worrying about burning the woods down.
