Today’s high temp in Boston was only 29°, which is the coldest it’s been since Valentine’s Day (12°)!  Did it feel like a shock to the system?  Well, maybe this is why: On this day last year, the high was 58°.  It would seem that Old Man Winter has arrived early this year.  That is to say, earlier than the last couple of winters, anyway!  I’ll say it again for maybe the billionth time:  “Remember Christmas Eve last year when it was 69°?!”  No such luck this year, as it looks like the cold is here to stay… and eventually intensify.
So, with this cold in place we’re setting the stage for winter weather.  It looks like another messy Monday commute is in the cards for us.  We’ll start Sunday morning in the teens for many and we’ll get to enjoy the sunshine for most of the day (if only for moral support with the warming strength of a flashlight this time of year).  It isn’t until the evening hours that the snow showers will turn on, and initially it will be spotty light snow.  Flurries or a light snow shower is a possibility through around 11pm, and then widespread snow showers will overspread the area.  This is a quick-moving system, but it does bring a decent thump of snow in the beginning – and with the cold in place, it won’t be hard for that snow to start accumulating.  Eventually, milder air will work in from the south and change our snow over to a wintry mix and then rain.  That’s been the big question all along:  How quickly does this happen?  My general thinking tonight is that the changeover happens for Boston points south between 4-6am, and for the rest of us between 7-9am.  How much snow will we pick up before that happens?
Not a lot of snow.  As I mentioned earlier, it’s a quick moving system.  We also aren’t talking about any wind or coastal concerns with this round, so really it’s just a headache for Monday morning (again… SIGH).  Please plan ahead and allow for extra time, and remember to pack your patience.  It is the holiday season, after all… which means we can all do our best to be a little more “cheery.”  :c)  #caseofthemondays
We may see some more flakes late Wednesday into early Thursday morning, especially for SE Mass/Cape/islands.  However, we’re just talking about a few flakes here – probably not enough to even put out a snow map.  The better part of the work-week is relatively uneventful, until another arctic front moves through for Thursday and Friday.  If you thought today was cold, just wait.  Thursday’s highs will be in the low to mid 20s and Friday’s highs may not make it out of the TEENS.  I’m also watching a potential system for next weekend – but it’s too far out to give any details at this point.  I just have “watching” on my extended forecast.  And “watch” we will.  – Breezy
