By 11 am today we had already made it into the 90s… making us heat wave official! In order to meet the criteria for a heat wave we needed three days in a row with temps at or above 90°. We had a high of 91° on Thursday and 98° yesterday. We topped out at 94° today. So, like it or not — we did it!

We have also been watching severe weather again today. Heat is a key ingredient we need to fuel storms and, like yesterday, we had plenty of it! Storms started firing north of the Pike inside 128 around 6 pm and they packed a punch! The first downpour started near Woburn and swiftly moved East across the North Shore. Immediately, the reports of hail, downed trees and strong wind gusts started pouring in. From there, things escalated quickly! By 8 pm, almost all of Massachusetts had been under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning at some point. A couple key differences between today and yesterday — dewpoints were quite a bit lower. Also, we had much cooler air aloft today so the hail potential was higher… and that threat delivered!

So, is there a light at the end of this tunnel? Well — kind of! We are storm free tomorrow for your Sunday. Heading to the beach? Maybe a cookout? You should be in good shape! Yay! We’ll keep the heat around with high temps around 90°, but we’ll say bye to some of that humidity… until Monday.

Severe weather is a concern again for Monday, much like last Monday (Muggy Monday round two perhaps)! Eyes to the sky Monday afternoon/evening if you have outdoor plans. Tuesday and Wednesday look dry again. We’ll watch an unsettled pattern again Thursday and Friday. It is safe to say the dog days of summer are with us. And, for that reason, my dog had to come to work today. Just kidding… I came in early to watch the radar and had no one to watch the little man. He’s a big fan of the cold floor in the weather center!
