Today marked day #14 that Boston has reached (at least) 90° this year. That’s normal in a given year for the city of Boston and also the same number of days it happened last year but last year 4 of those 14 days happened in September! Certainly our hottest summer since 2013 when we had 17 days of 90° heat.
Of course, the heat is only half the battle as pure tropical air arrived yesterday and is still with us this evening. This humidity, when factored into the heat (similar to wind/wind chill during winter), creates a heat index over 100°….that’s dangerously hot, so any outdoor plans for exercise this evening should be tempered and aided by fluids–heck, even sitting in Fenway or Gillette will be taxing on the body. Despite all this heat & humidity, storm growth has been limited to portions of western New England this afternoon.
I think we’ll do it all over again tomorrow with hazy, hot and humid with firmly entrenched across the region. Plan on temps into the mid 90s yet again with heat indices around & above 100° tomorrow afternoon. Great for the beaches, lakes & pools. The storm threat tomorrow afternoon is a little higher than today–still isolated in nature tho.
The reason for the higher chance of storms tomorrow is a cool front dropping out of northern New England. This front, as it gets closer, will pop a few late afternoon & evening showers/storms. This front will do an about-face on our temps for the start of the weekend! Saturday temps along the coast are likely to be held in the low 70s, while farther inland the afternoon highs reach the low 80s. Plan on a fair amount of clouds with a few random showers/storms well inland (where that warmer air is). Sunday, the front heads back north and so do the cooler temps so plan on hazy, hot & humid weather across the region with a few scattered showers & storms.
The good news with this wavering front is that it keeps the chance of rain in the forecast for several days and while it won’t rain continuously for several days, most of us should still pick up 1-4″ of rain between tomorrow and early next week. Great for the drought.
Winter is coming….just not anytime soon.
