Well, it seems that all of that hype for strong storms tonight has kinda fizzled. Though, I did mention several times yesterday that the POTENTIAL was there. If the storms were to get going, then they could have gotten feisty. While the SPC has taken us out of the “Slight Risk” area for severe weather tonight, there’s still a chance that we could see some stronger storms this evening. We’ll continue to track this as we move through Friday. Oh YEAH! It’s FRIDAY! #TGIF.
Now, about the heat: As I write this blog, all of the United States are at 90° or above – except for Washington and Alaska. It certainly was HOT today, but not even close to the record for this day! Boston hit 97° this afternoon, and while it is the hottest day of the summer – and the second day of our “heat wave” (tomorrow makes 3-days in a row) – and the hottest since September 11, 2013 – the record for today is 103° in 2011!!
**** UPDATE: BOS hit 98° for a high today. It’s worth mentioning that with the humidity, some spots FELT like the triple-digits. Without going into too much detail (because I blogged about this in depth last week), when the humidity is added to the heat it can feel MUCH hotter out due to the inability for our sweat to evaporate. Evaporation is a cooling process, so it’s not our SWEAT that keeps us cool, but rather the evaporation of that sweat that keeps us cool. When there’s already moisture in the air (high humidity), the sweat has a more difficult time evaporating. Gross.
Anyway – with forecast highs for tomorrow once again in the mid-90s, we’re in for that “heat wave!” Last time we had a heat wave was September of last year. Just think about that… we could be getting 90° well into December. We’re really just getting started… so today was good “practice.” In fact, we could get 90° highs to verify EVERY DAY THIS WEEK. Maybe not for Boston every day, but I think away from the coastline and for some of those “usual suspects” that come in hot (Fitchburg, I’m looking at you) have a good shot at 90°+ through the end of next week.
We still have a threat for strong storms tomorrow afternoon/evening. However, like today – all of the ingredients need to come together at the right time… and now we wait and see if that happens. Best chance for an isolated storm will be in N. and E. Massachusetts. As Chris Lambert put it earlier today, “I’ve raised the white flag with lawn care. Planning on dropping seed next spring.” Dry weather usually leads to more dry weather… So stop wearing yourself out doing that “rain dance!” Especially in this heat, if you’re dancing your heart out, hoping for rain, at least stay hydrated. – Breezy
