Many days come & go with little fanfare and then there are others like today that carry a lot of meaning. June 1st:
- The first day of Meteorological Summer (June 1st-August 31st)–often the 3 hottest months of the year. Meteorologists use this as a standardized way of comparing/contrasting past summers (we do it with winter as well—December 1st-February 28th).
- The first day of the Atlantic Hurricane Season….runs through November 30th. The time of year when most of the tropical activity in the Atlantic Basin occur but we can–and do–see tropical systems form outside these dates…..Hurricane Alex formed in January and just this past weekend…Tropical Storm Bonnie.
- The 5-year anniversary of the Springfield Tornado. What a day that was. I recall saying to Pete that afternoon “If we didn’t have state boundaries on that radar image, I’d think we were in Minnesota or Iowa!”. The storm led to 3 casualties, 200 injuries and close to 150 million dollars in damage. It was a long-track tornado—on the ground for 39 miles/70 minutes…something you just don’t see in New England but once every 20-30 years. Unreal.Thankfully we don’t have any tornadoes in the forecast anytime soon! We do have some cool weather tho as that east wind we had today is with us again tomorrow. The east wind will scrape some moisture off the ocean overnight and create a deck of clouds for Thursday. I think the clouds will break apart as you go inland but plan on mostly cloudy skies along the coast. The increase in clouds will keep temps in the 60s for much of Thursday….near 60 at the coast, 70 farther inland.
Friday is warmer (and more humid) but still a fair amount of clouds as a weak front slides through the region. This front may pop a few light showers but nothing heavy or long-lasting. don’t cancel tee times (I’m not cancelling mine!) The weekend is still looking split….Saturday the outside day with sunny skies & warm temps with Sunday offering clouds, showers & cooler temps.
Enjoy the rest of June 1st, 2016.
