Two small storms are now in the rearview mirror and except for a stray sprinkle/flurry midday Thursday we are quiet for a few days around these parts. Overall, we do have a fast-moving jet stream over the next several days which does bring storms at a greater frequency (than we might like) but also limits the potential firepower as they don’t spend too much time in any one place.

Our next weather event is actually an arctic front–something we didn’t contend with last December. If you despise cold weather then last December was your December to remember as it finished as the warmest December on record for Boston. Check out last year’s breakdown of high temps for Boston:

Eesh….Frosty’s worst nightmare. Last year’s warmth was driven by a powerful El Nino but he’s long gone for this winter. This winter won’t be brutally cold but certainly closer to normal. Let’s see how that chart looks on December 20th…and then the 31st. A number of our weather models do continue to advertise colder-than-normal temps for the next 1-2 weeks. Here is one of those models:

Not much warmth expected. Great for skiers and their ski areas as well as those of you who love to make/maintain those outdoor rinks!

As for the snow lovers, no blockbusters (remember, that fast-moving jet stream needs to chill out/slow down and buckle to make the big storms) but there is likely to be a battle between warmer air trying to knock the arctic air out of New England—Monday may be that first fight with perhaps another fight in about 10-12 days.

Enjoy what’s left of your Wednesday.
