The title for this weather blog is bad – but if you read on, it will make sense! Today we’re in for such a large range in temperatures, due to a backdoor cold front keeping NE Massachusetts cooler than areas south and west of 495. Coastal areas, Boston points north, will top out in the 60s. Take it down to Buzzard’s Bay, and temps will top out in the mid to upper 70s where sunshine breaks out. Far inland and into Connecticut, temps will get into the 80s. So, to put a broad brushstroke of “65-85°” in my forecast for today may seem like a cop-out, but it is completely true. How’s your day going? Depends on where you’re located! It’s not often that you see Martha’s Vineyard with warmer temperatures than Bedford and Norwood, but as I write this blog MVY is sitting at 75° and Bedford at 60°! The areas that get the most heat today (again, well inland and west of 495) will be most likely to see any shower/thunderstorm action. Most stay dry, but there could be a pop up storm that brings some moderate to heavy rainfall for a time during the afternoon.
The big question is, “How wet will Memorial Day get?” We know in this area, during this time of year, we can get an amalgam of different weather conditions. This year is no exception. From 92° in Boston yesterday (a tied record), to only the mid 60s today (backdoor front), to tropical moisture moving in tomorrow. When I say, “It’s not a complete washout,” I mean there will be some dry hours. We’re still watching Tropical Depression Bonnie to our south. While it will not directly impact our forecast area, it will send some tropical moisture in our direction to really “juice up” the atmosphere. Right now it looks like our best chance for widespread rain will be during the morning hours through about noon, and then we’ll maybe see some breaks of sun and dry hours in the afternoon. If we do get the sun, we will get more warming, which will only add fuel to the fire for possible thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening. The bottom line is, tomorrow is a day to keep the umbrella handy and be “weather aware.”
Don’t worry. Better days are ahead, when the sunshine and 80s return on Tuesday. Enjoy the rest of your weekend! – Breezy
