In hopes of reducing the risk of their cancer coming back, an increasing number of women are choosing to surgically remove their Healthy breast after experiencing breast cancer.

Experts said that a recent study by the Dana-Farber cancer institute, there's no strong evidence it works.

The risk of developing a new cancer in the healthy breast is very low according doctors.

"Women want to do everything they can but taking off the other breast probably is not going to make a difference and it's a pretty drastic procedure for a person who is young, healthy and has a long time to live,” Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s Dr. Ann Partridge said.

A third of the study participants said the side effects of removing the healthy breast were worse than they thought they'd be, but the majority said that for peace of mind and they would do it again.
