Local couple Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir wowing the hometown crowd in their short program Thursday.
The pair put up by far the highest point total of the day, they were the only ones to score more than 70 points and they are now in great shape heading into the weekend’s long program.
“We didn’t expect to have this much of a cushion between us and second, we’re ready to kill it on Saturday,” Castelli said.
Marissa and Simon fed off the hometown crowd’s energy.
Their choice of “Black Magic Woman” and “Smooth” by Carlos Santana brought roars from the fans.
“Thank you Boston, what a crowd. It was just, from start to finish it was such energy, such support,” Shnapir said.
Looking ahead to the weekend the real competition might be for second place Felicia Zhang and Nathan Bartholomay jumped out a lead halfway through the short program.
But they barely held on to second place thanks to a strong performance by Deedee Leng and Timothy Leduc, just a tenth of a point separates those teams.
